Traffic report
For the curious: What kind of traffic does a site like this get?
Not much – yet. There's a good reason.
The old GURPS/GAMES Diner built up a healthy roster of daily visitors. How many? Hard to say; the reporting tools I had in place were clumsy and yielded very different answers, depending on the tool. "Many dozens of unique visitors per day" is likely a fair answer – tiny by most any standard, but hey, this is a niche corner of a niche hobby.
However, the old site lay stagnant for a year, and readership dropped off. That's reflected in stats for this new site. I'm armed with Google Analytics this time, and that's showing 25-35 unique visitors, and 65-130 page views, per day. To the degree that the new and old measurements are comparable, that's certainly a drop-off.
Time to rebuild after a sleepy year. First, some site announcements are in order, as soon as my new, on-again-off-again hosting service completes its ongoing network repairs. (I hate to send crowds to a "server not found" message.)
Next, I need to get lots of sites to update their links, many of which point to the old io.com address.
And I know the most important factor in rebooting successfully: Content, content, content. I'm on it. (New goods will also get the search engines back to checking the site more frequently, and ranking it higher.)
So there's not much to report right now on traffic, other than "once in a while, I'm going to report on traffic". Google Analytics churns out plenty of fun data: where visitors are coming from, what they're looking at, and so on, but I have only a week or so of statistics. With more time under the site's belt, I'll post any interesting findings.
I'd love to hear from webmasters of similar small fan sites. What kind of traffic and visitors do you get? What lessons have you learned on serving visitors? I'm happy to share notes with webmasters, and welcome ideas (and suggestions, lumps, anything) from visitors too.
