Reincarnation! (in progress)
This site is moribund.
But no more. Finally, a makeover.
Yeah, I did it before, a year ago. And as faithful visitors know well, there hasn't been much added to or changed on the site since then. This time, though, things are different. This update is all about function – a new site that supports work on projects, that aids creation and collaboration.
I'm talking one of those fancypants content management system-based sites. Drupal under the hood, if you have an interest. You see, the Diner actually does have projects in progress. The big one is an oh-so-secret "Project T", about which more may be said later. Then there are the many, many requests for updates and additions to the old Diner stuff, especially the 3e-mired GULLIVER, COSH, GLAIVE, and the assorted compadres of those supplements. I really appreciate the interest and encouragement from visitors and long-time correspondents – especially those who magnanimously show up with offers to help, or even some completed work tucked under an arm – and I feel bad about doing so little with and for those folks.
The site's been one bottleneck. Doing anything with a static site, and quirky software packages like GoLive, is a real pain. It's not conducive to output, especially big projects the likes of GULLIVER.
That's where content management comes in. I've been working much with such sites of late, and while my lack of tech skills and (especially glaringly) graphic design can't be hid (thanks, but this is an existing template you see), a content management system makes many tasks so much easier. No, it's not perfect, and some tasks may even become harder. But adding and modifying content takes place right from the browser – no wacky apps needed. Site-wide changes are a snap. And Drupal is powerful hoodoo; limitless collaborative functions are built right in. Whether this site will support such online collaboration, and how, is something to work on.
There's no snap-of-the-fingers way to incorporate all the old site's content into the system, though. For now, this site will be a bit two-faced. This spiffy front end will sport news, blog postings, new content, and so on. Links to the site's old content will open up the old static pages.
Hiccups and weirdness are inevitable during the transition. Please send notice of boo-boos. Even of typos and grammar slips – we hates them, we does. Please make comments on posts and other content. Please use polls and other keen features that pop up. Please let me know what you'd like to see on this site.
