As of September 5, I appear to be back in email action. That certainly got me off to a rocky start with new hosting service DreamHost, but if things from here on live up to the promise of their great hosting plan, and several positive recommendations I've received, I'll be happy to forgive and forget.

(Addition: Out of the blue, DH credited me $10 for the downtime. We're off to a much better start now. They do seem like good folks, if a bit overwhelmed by current workload.)
